PLOMBIERES LES BAINS
LA CHAPELLE DE LA VIERGE DES CHAMPS
Description
This 1850 chapel (date visible on the gable) is located in the hamlet of Granges-de-Plombières. It was built by private owners.
Its originality lies in the fact that it is the only building in the canton to have a long-sided lava roof, "on a clod of earth". At the time, this type of roofing was mainly used for farm outbuildings. The special features of this type of roofing are the use of a clay soil carefully packed onto the outer surface of the sandstone vault.
The Chapelle de la Vierge des Champs stands out as the most authentic of a group of thirteen preserved or listed chapels in the canton. Seven of them were built in the 19th century, while four were built between the two world wars. These buildings, mainly votive chapels, were erected in response to circumstances such as an epidemic, a cure or a journey.
The roof was restored in 1998.
It contains a number of plaster statues and votive offerings.
