PLOMBIERES LES BAINS
CHAPELLE NOTRE DAME DE LA CONSOLATION
Description
Until 1889, the cemetery in Ruaux (a village attached to the commune of Plombières-les-bains) adjoined the church of Saint Jean Baptiste.
When it became too small and for reasons of hygiene, it was decided to move it to the wooded hill 250 m west of the church, which was chosen for its peace and quiet. An all-stone chapel was built to watch over the remains of the deceased buried under what now appears to be a large cross traced on the ground.
A chapel was then built to watch over the dead and named by the locals "Notre Dame de Consolation". An open-air mass has been celebrated there every year since 1980.
