SAINT ETIENNE LES REMIREMONT
ERMITAGE SAINT ARNOULD
Description
Located in the Massif du Fossard, the former hermitage of Saint Arnould is a site steeped in history. Although few elements are visible today, you can discover a cross marking the site of the former chapel, a few modern engravings and the remains of a former farm.
Saint Arnoul de Metz, born around 582 in Lay-Saint-Christophe, was the 29th bishop of Metz from 613 to 628. After serving as bishop, he became a hermit near the monastery of Mont Habend (Saint-Mont), founded by his friend Saint Romaric. He devoted his last years to caring for lepers, until his death around 640. He is also recognized as one of the ancestors of the Carolingian dynasty, being the great-great-grandfather of Emperor Charlemagne.
