PLOMBIERES LES BAINS

BAIN ROMAIN

Description

***Roman Spa closed until further notice***

The Roman baths are known as Calodaé. The name of the centre of balneotherapy makes reference to caldarium which in the Antiquity was part of thermes where on could take hot baths.

The thermes of Plombières are very simple which confirms the idea they were built before all for welcome soldiers war. However, the town has the largest open-air swimming pool north of the Loire, bordered by four Gallo-Roman terraces that can still be seen at the entrance to the current building.

The baths underwent several renovations, notably in the 16th century following flooding, followed by reconstruction in the 18th century and refurbishment work in the 19th century. A total reconstruction of the 20th will be carried out on the plans architect François Grillot and carried out under the aegis of Robert Danis. Au pied des gradins dans le vestibule se trouve une mosaïque datant de 1938 et dessinée par Robert et Franck Danis. Some walls are covered by wall paintings due to Frank Danis, restored in 1996 and classified at Monuments historiques in 2001.
