LE VAL D AJOL

CROIX DE CHEMIN AU VAL D'AJOL

Description

The first crosses in the Val d'Ajol date back to Charlemagne, and were erected to mark the boundaries of cultivated land. The people of Ajol soon got into the habit of erecting crosses in memory of a loved one who had died, whether a victim of violent death or not. In this way, the house was placed under the protection of heaven. It was also used as an Ex-voto following a wish.

The Val d'Ajol had 145 crosses, 3 of which are listed as historic monuments (a 16th-century structure in the hamlet of Les Chênes, a 17th-century crossroads cross in Larrière and a crossroads cross, known as the Jaranceau cross, dating from 1626 in an open field). It forms part of the most important Way of the Cross in Christendom.
