REMIREMONT
THE CANONICAL NEIGHBOURHOOD
Description
The canonical houses were private homes where lived the Canonesses.
The Canonesses were religious women from noble or royal families. They were held in any vow, and could leave the religious life to marry and go back to a secular life.
The Highest Nobility of Lorraine, Franche-Comte, Champagne and Germany had the privilege and honor to be able to place their daughter in the Chapter of Remiremont.
The abbess at the head of the chapter of Canonesses wore the title of Princess of Empire.
They lived in beautiful private houses, which can still be admired today.
These houses are located all around the abbey church of St. Peter and Abbey Palace, thus defining the canonical quarter. It was an individualized area around which the bourgeois and commercial city has developed.
There remains in Remiremont 14 canonical houses easily recognizable by their classic and harmonious facade of the eighteenth century . Most buildings were built in this period.
